SUMMARY:The Village Dance - Community Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:The Village Dance Series begins its 2024 season on Saturday\, April 20 at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford Center. Laurie Indenbaum on fiddle and Mary Cay Brass on piano will provide lively New England dance tunes. Andy Davis plays accordion and calls the dances in an inclusive style\, welcoming to all. Sit-in musicians are welcome at the dance.  \nThere is a potluck supper at 5:30 pm. The dance runs from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. At the break in the dance\, refreshments are served along with a traditional story told for all ages.  The dance offers something for everyone: food\, music\, friends\, dancing\, storytelling and good fellowship.  \nThe Village Dance Series—now in its 34th year—is an opportunity for families and friends to come together to enjoy contra dance – one of New England’s revered traditional pastimes. The program includes traditional New England contra dances\, square dances\, circle mixers\, and couple dances.  Prior dance experience is not necessary.  All ages and abilities are welcome. These events are co-sponsored by New England Dancing Masters and Southern Vermont Traditional Music—the creators of the River Jam Romp. \nThe dances on May 18 and June 8 will take place at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center. The May dance will feature master Québéc musicians Claude Méthé and Dana Whittle on fiddle and guitar. Claude and Dana will lead a  fiddle workshop from 3-5 pm before the potluck and dance.  The June dance will feature Laurel Swift leading the Brattleboro Music Center youth traditional music ensembles\, including the Young Tradition Vermont group\, “Fiddleheads.” \nAdmission is $10 for adults\, $6 for children and $25 for families.  For more information or directions call  Andy Davis at 257-1819\, or email: andy@dancingmasters.com

SUMMARY:Shakespeare Page & Stage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn Shakespeare? Or try out acting? \nWe have a fun workshop series coming to the BBCC – starting April 23rd (Shakespeare’s Birthday!) at 7:30pm! If you’ve ever wanted to learn some Shakespeare\, this is for you! \nThis approach combines acting and academics: the group will study a piece of Shakespeare’s work on the page and then work it out on the stage. This workshop will explore a small piece of Shakespeare and perform it at the end\, just for participants. (Though you can also observe if you’re stage-shy.) \nIn Shakespeare’s day\, shows didn’t have directors as we know them. That left actors to figure out how to play the roles themselves. Shakespeare wrote his scripts with clues and subtle road maps in the text for the actors to pick up what he wanted. \nThis first workshop will focus on Hamlet’s 3.1 address to the Players: “Speak the speech\, I pray you…” which will help us uncover what might’ve been Shakespeare’s notes to his own performers. \nAttendees will learn some performance techniques and some comprehension tricks. Script excerpts and take-home material will be provided. Please RSVP to attend as space is limited! DESCRIPTION:Love Lost Diaries is the work of Marc Considine\, a playwright in Hardwick\, in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.  It will be directed by Julie Holland\, of Guilford\, with performances on May 3-5\, 2024. \nLove Lost Diaries is Guilford Center Stage’s 12th production.  Director Julie Holland has appeared as an actor in nine of the previous shows\, and stage-managed another.  Love Lost Diaries is a bittersweet story of a lifelong marriage that could have been so much more loving than it was\, if only the couple had communicated their feelings to each other.  The story of the married couple overlaps with the lives of three high school students who discover the diaries of the wife after she dies. \nLearn more about: Guilford Center Stage

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 4th\, join fellow Vermonters in this unique\, statewide volunteer event to clean up our neighborhood roads. This is an opportunity for us to work together as a community and focus on a common goal — cleaning up our Guilford roads. If you can volunteer even for an hour or two to pick up roadside litter\, it will make a huge difference! \nStop by the BBCC from 8am – 5pm on Saturday May 4th. We will have Green Up trash bags and reflective vests for volunteers to pick up\, and the dump trucks will be parked there until 5pm to receive all the roadside trash you can gather in your bags. Note that you can also pick up Green Up trash bags ahead of time at the Town on any day they are open (Monday through Thursday\, 7am – 5pm). \nWe will also have a map where you can sign up for a road to clean. Or\, you can sign up for a road ahead of time by emailing greenupguilford@gmail.com or calling 617 596-0460.
