Become an Election Worker

Are you interested in volunteering to be an Election Worker at the Guilford Polls? The Town of Guilford relies on the Board of Civil Authority and volunteers to help run a successful Election. To be an Election Worker for any Guilford Election you must be:

  • A Guilford resident
  • Registered to vote in the town of Guilford
  • The only exception is any Guilford resident between the ages of 16 and 17, with the consent of their parent or legal guardian and under the supervision of an adult worker, can be Election Workers.
  •  No prior training or experience is required; the town will help you to be prepared

Applying to be an Election Worker

To be an Election Worker we ask that you fill out a copy of the Election Worker Application located below and return it to the Town Clerk by email townclerk@guilfordvt.gov, in person or by mail to the Guilford Town Office located at 236 School Rd, Guilford, VT, 05301.

*Applications can be submitted at any point throughout the year to be added to a list of available Election Workers for any Election. All Elections Workers will be asked to confirm availability before each election but are not required to participate in every election.

Training

No prior training or experience is required to apply. All first-time Election Workers are required to attend an election training session that will be announced closer to the next Election date.

Training dates for the March 3rd Local/ School Election will be:

  • Tuesday February 17th at 3pm at the Guilford Town Office
  • Thursday February 19th at 5pm at the Guilford Town Office

Election Worker Tasks

Guilford Election Workers are a volunteer position (unpaid) that help with the following tasks:

  • Greeting Voters
    • Welcoming Voters as they arrive to the Polls and directing them to the Check in table
  • Helping with Voter Registration
    • Helping the Town Clerk and Assistant Town Clerk collect registration forms for first time voters.
  • Checking Voters In/ Out
    • Responsible with Checking Voters in to the voter checklist and handing out Ballots
    • Responsible for Checking Voters Out and guiding voters to the Ballot Box or Tabulator
  • Monitoring the Voting Tabulator/ Ballot Box
    • Making sure that everyone turns in their ballot before leaving and reporting any issues with the tabulator to the Election Officer
  • Sanitizing Election booths and pens
    • Makes sure that Election booths and pens are clean and no one has left anything behind.
  • Assisting the Clerk & Election Officials
    • Shadowing Election Officials to learn about the election process and assisting in any miscellaneous tasks.
    • This is a very good opportunity for anyone who is in the 16-17 age group or anyone curious in helping and learning more about elections
  • Picking up and dropping off dinner (Pizza is provided for Election Workers after the polls close)
    • You would be responsible for picking up the order and bringing it to the Polls by 7pm. The order will be organized by the Town Clerk
  • Set Up and Break down of the Election
    • Helping with set up either the afternoon before or the morning of the Election
    • Helping Break Down the election set up after the polls close at 7pm
  • Assisting with Town Meeting
    • Helping with Checking Voters into the meeting
    • Collecting floor ballots in case of a paper vote
    • Break Down: Helping strike the School Gym after Town Meeting and moving chairs.
