Guilford Conservation Commission Meeting Minutes 9.19.24
September 19, 2024 at the Town Office and Zoom
Attending: Linda Hecker, Anne Montgomery, Linda Lembke, Bill Jewell, Susan Bonthron, Josh Farr, Karen Murphy
Not attending: Steve Soszynski, Bevan Quinn
Meeting called to order at 5:30.
No adjustment to agenda.
The minutes from July 24, 2024 were unanimously accepted by unanimous roll call vote.
Brief review of June Action Steps.
Educational Opportunities:
Vermont Conservation Conference Oct. 7 in Randolph
Environmental Leadership Training Course online—parts 1 and 2
Wildlife Corridor Signage:
Josh is working on the Wildlife Crossings signs for the Weatherhead Hollow Pond Area.
Weeks Forest Update:
A discussion about the recent dog/human interaction on the Weeks Forest Carriage Trail resulted in a motion to place a sign at the trail head which says “Pets On Leash.” The vote was seconded and passed unanimously via roll call.
There was also discussion about the register at the trail’s end and inappropriate comments. They will be removed from the register.
A revised trail guide will be printed after the old ones run out.
An opportunity to have the Vermont Trails and Greenway Council advise the GCC about the possibility of making the trail ADA compliant. Motion made to have this assessment done, seconded and voted yes unanimously by roll call. There is no cost and no obligation to follow the recommendations.
Governor’s Mountain legal trail:
There was communication from a land owner and the courtesy about gaining permission before hunting. It is planned to have a brief reminder in the Gazette to hunters that, although not required, it is the polite thing to do in asking permission to hunt on unposted land.
Land Use Planning with the Planning Commission:
Three initiatives are planned to address town wide land planning:
- Inspiring stories about the value of land conservation
- Photo exhibit at the BBCC
- Joint meeting with VT River Conservancy, the Vermont Land trust representative, and a representative from the Green Mountain Conservancy
Trails Committee: No information submitted.
Recruiting new members: Ongoing
