The Guilford Conservation Commission was formed according to Vermont statute in 2000 to act in an advisory capacity to our town’s Selectboard, which appoints our 9 members to staggered 3-year terms. Our mission is to identify, inventory, foster education about, and help protect Guilford’s natural, scenic, recreational, historic, educational, cultural, architectural, agricultural, and archaeological resources for the public good. Our mandate is to “help residents and town officials recognize the value of these resources and administer them for the benefit of future generations.”
Our recent long-term projects include an inventory of Guilford’s natural resources, an ash tree survey, and initiatives to deal with invasive plants and insects. We act as stewards to the Weeks Forest Carriage Trail and hope to extend the current trail. We write the Natural Resources section of the town plan and work with the Planning Commission on land use planning. In conjunction with Guilford Cares and other groups, we lead walks to highlight our forests and fields. We value collaboration with other town commissions and committees (Planning, Recreation, and Energy) and regional groups that share our concerns about forest fragmentation, water quality, and the impact of climate change on our landscape. We welcome visitors and volunteers to join our monthly meetings and our activities and educational programs. We also welcome donations of money/land to support our Conservation Fund. You can send a check to Guilford Conservation Fund, Town Office 236 School Road, Guilford VT 05301 or contact us for more information.
