Conservation Commission Special Meeting Agenda, 04.20.2023

Conservation Commission Special Meeting Agenda
April 20, 2023: 7:00 pm at Broad Brook Community Center

In place of our regularly scheduled business meeting, the Conservation Commission is sponsoring a presentation by Sam Schneski, Windham County Forester, on Reserve Forestland.  This should be of interest to all Guilford landowners, especially those who participate in the “Current Use” program for woodlands.  We will also talk about recommendations for managing ash trees now that the Emerald Ash Borer has been identified in Guilford.

The public is warmly invited to attend and participate.

What: Reserve Forestland

When: Thursday Apr 20, 2023, 7 to 8:30 PM
Where: Broad Brook Community Center, 3940 Guilford Center Road, Guilford, VT

Windham County Forester and Guilford resident Sam Schneski will talk about a new land use category in Vermont’s Use Value Appraisal (UVA) program called Reserve Forestland. This change will allow landowners, whose land is eligible, to develop “old forest” conditions on their property while participating in the UVA program (also know as the Current Use program).

The presentation is based on the new UVA subcategory but will address ways that anyone can manage forestland to increase old forest functions and characteristics, which provide important contributions to biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and forest resilience in a changing climate.

In addition, Sam will offer recommendations for managing ash trees now that Emerald Ash Borer has been identified in Guilford.
